Ghana’s New Patriotic Party (NPP) suffered its worst defeat in the 2024 general elections, with the party’s presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, losing to John Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) by over 1.7 million votes.

According to data, the NDC won 184 parliamentary seats, while the NPP secured 87 seats, resulting in a significant difference of 96 seats.

The presidential election results showed John Mahama garnering 56.42% of the votes, while Dr. Bawumia secured 41.75%.

A political analyst, Dr. Razak Kojo Opoku and founding President of UP Institute
has called on the NPP to engage in a truthful reflection and make strategic decisions regarding its 2028 presidential ticket, leadership, and party structures.

Dr. Razak Kojo Opoku noted that the party’s performance in the 2024 elections was its worst since 1992.

The 2024 election results mark a significant shift in Ghana’s political landscape, with the NDC securing a decisive victory in both the presidential and parliamentary elections. The NPP will likely face challenges in rebuilding its support and regaining power in the next elections.
