In a symbolic gesture of commitment to reviving healthcare infrastructure in the Ashanti Region, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, the Ashanti Regional Minister, today led a weeding exercise at the long-abandoned Sewua Government Hospital in the Bosomtwe District.

The hospital, constructed over 8 years ago under President John Dramani Mahama’s administration, has remained incomplete and neglected since 2016 when President Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo took office .

The weeding spree saw participation from various stakeholders, including Engineer Abdullah Amin, District Chief Executive of Bosomtwi, members of the Bosomtwi District Assembly, security agencies, students, NDC members, community members, and Sewuahene Nana Kwaku Sarkodie II.

This collective effort underscores the regional government’s determination to restore the facility to serve its intended purpose.

The 520-bed Sewua Hospital was formally commissioned by the previous NPP government on January 4, 2025, just days before they exited power, a move described by contractor Euroget De-Invest as “illegal and a breach of contract” due to incomplete works and unpaid contractual obligations.

The Chief of Sewua, Nana Kwaku Amankwah Sarkodie II, has repeatedly called for urgent completion, highlighting concerns over obsolete medical equipment and regional healthcare disparities.

Dr. Frank Amoakohene has pledged swift operationalization of the Sewua and Afari Hospitals to alleviate pressure on Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and improve regional healthcare access.

President John Mahama has also reaffirmed commitment to completing the Sewua Hospital, citing its importance in easing congestion at Komfo Anokye.

Key challenges hindering the hospital’s commissioning include lack of electricity connection and inadequate access roads, issues the Health Minister, Kwaku Agyemang Manu, has assured will be addressed .

The Sewua Hospital’s revival reflects broader efforts by the NDC government to prioritize stalled projects and enhance healthcare infrastructure, aligning with national sanitation exercises and local development goals.
