Officials of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Ashanti Region have called for the immediate removal of Elizabeth Arjarquah as manager of the axle weigh stations, citing grave concerns over alleged corrupt practices that purportedly undermine government revenue collection.
Speaking at a press conference held this morning, Elvis Agyemang, Constituency Communication Officer for Afigya Kwabre North, revealed that investigations conducted by the party indicate Elizabeth Ajarquah engaged in misconduct during her tenure under the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) government administration.
Agyemang alleged Arjarquah reportedly, using Deputy Roads Minister Hon Alhassan Suhini as a cover for her alleged corrupt activities.
According to him, trucks were allegedly overcharged between GHC5,000.00 and GHC20,000.00 Ghana cedis for overweight infractions, with excess monies purportedly not accounted for.
He again indicated that, many trucks were reportedly not properly weighed; instead, they were parked until midnight following negotiations between Jakpa and drivers, with collected monies allegedly not reflected in official records.
This purportedly led to significant government revenue losses and congestion at the sites.
Elvis Agyemang noted that intervention by National Security in the Ashanti Region resulted in substantial revenue collection for government accounts, contrasting with practices under Jakpa’s management.
The NDC Ashanti Region officials stress their party’s commitment to transparency, fairness, and inclusiveness in matters concerning engagements for members and government operations.
They urge all members and the public to disregard any conflicting information circulating about the axle weigh station engagements, cautioning against unauthorized statements that could sow confusion or undermine party unity and trust.
While specific recent developments directly involving Elizabeth Arjarquah are highlighted by the NDC’s allegations, broader discussions on accountability and corruption within state institutions have been noted in Ghana.
In August 2023, several Ghanaian state institutions dismissed staff over corruption-related issues, underscoring efforts to address misconduct.
