Residents and businesses in some parts of the Kumasi Metropolis were plunged into darkness on Monday, January 26, 2026, following a power outage caused by an underground cable fault at Abuakwa Maakro.

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Ashanti West Region, in an official public notice, explained that the interruption in power supply was the result of a technical fault on an underground cable located between the ECG Office at Abuakwa Maakro and the Maakro Junction.
The fault, according to the power distributor, disrupted electricity supply to several communities within the affected catchment area.

Areas impacted by the outage include Atwima Koforidua ADD, Aburaho, Abuakwa DKC, Manhyia Nursing School, as well as adjoining neighbourhoods.

The sudden loss of power caused inconvenience to households, traders, students, and small businesses, many of whom rely heavily on stable electricity for their daily activities.

In its statement, ECG assured customers that its engineering teams were promptly deployed to the fault location and are working assiduously to identify, repair, and rectify the problem to enable the restoration of power supply as soon as possible.

The company emphasized that resolving underground cable faults can be complex, as they often require extensive technical work and careful excavation to prevent further damage to infrastructure.

“ECG wishes to assure affected customers that our engineers are on site working tirelessly to rectify the fault and restore supply,” the statement noted, while appealing for patience and cooperation from the public.

The power distributor also expressed regret over the inconvenience caused by the outage, acknowledging the disruption it has had on economic, educational, and domestic activities within the affected communities.

Power outages linked to underground cable faults have, in recent times, raised concerns among residents, who have called for sustained investment in infrastructure maintenance and upgrades to minimize recurring disruptions.

ECG, however, maintains that it is committed to improving service delivery and ensuring reliable power supply across the Ashanti Region.
As of press time, restoration works were ongoing, with customers hopeful that electricity supply would be restored within the shortest possible time.

ECG urged customers to stay informed through its official communication channels for updates and reiterated its commitment to serving the public with efficiency and professionalism.
