Ghana–Latvia Relations Strengthened as Both Countries Deepen Mutual Cooperation

Ghana has taken another significant step in strengthening its diplomatic footprint in Europe, as relations between Ghana and the Republic of Latvia continue to grow through renewed political engagement and cooperation in key sectors of mutual interest.
The Ambassador of the Republic of Ghana to the Federal Republic of Germany, His Excellency Prof. Ohene Adjei, who is concurrently accredited to Latvia, joined the Honourable Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ghana, Mr. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, on a high-level working visit to Latvia. The visit underscored Ghana’s firm commitment to building strong international partnerships while safeguarding the welfare, safety, and dignity of Ghanaian citizens living abroad.
The diplomatic engagement was widely seen as a milestone in Ghana–Latvia relations, reflecting both countries’ readiness to explore broader collaboration in governance, trade, innovation, and technical development.
Ambassador Presents Letters of Credence
A major highlight of the visit was the presentation of Letters of Credence by H.E. Prof. Ohene Adjei to the Latvian Minister of Foreign Affairs, officially affirming his role as Ghana’s accredited representative to Latvia.
Prof. Ohene Adjei, a distinguished public servant who previously served as the Chief Executive Officer of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), now represents Ghana under the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government led by President John Dramani Mahama.
Speaking during the ceremony, the Ambassador emphasized the importance of diplomacy in strengthening consular relations and advancing political dialogue between the two nations.
According to him, Ghana and Latvia must continue to embrace constructive diplomatic approaches in addressing consular matters while deepening cooperation in areas of shared interest.
“The two countries must ensure the practice of diplomacy in resolving consular issues, enhancing political dialogue, and exploring partnerships that will benefit both nations,” Prof. Adjei stated.
Ghana Poised to Expand Ties with Sister Nations
Prof. Ohene Adjei further assured that Ghana remains committed to extending robust ties with sister nations across Europe and beyond, stressing that the protection of Ghanaian nationals abroad remains a central priority of government.
He reiterated that Ghana’s foreign policy under the current administration places strong emphasis on citizen welfare, international respect, and mutually beneficial engagement.
“The government of Ghana’s unwavering commitment to protecting its citizens overseas is paramount,” he added.
Key Meetings to Boost Cooperation
The visit also featured a series of strategic meetings with several Latvian institutions, including engagements with the Ministries of the Interior, Education and Science, aimed at strengthening cooperation in governance, education, and human development.
In addition, discussions were held with major private-sector stakeholders in areas such as:
Information and Communication Technology (ICT)
Energy development
Agro-business and agricultural innovation
Entrepreneurship and technical advancement
These engagements were aimed at laying the foundation for stronger economic and technical collaboration, with the potential to open new avenues for trade, investment, and knowledge exchange between Ghana and Latvia.

Commitment to Ghana’s Image Abroad
H.E. Prof. Ohene Adjei expressed gratitude to Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa for the visit and reaffirmed his dedication to serving Ghana with distinction.

He pledged to work tirelessly to promote Ghana’s image abroad, strengthen bilateral ties, and ensure that Ghanaian interests are effectively represented in Latvia and across Europe.

The working visit marks an important chapter in Ghana’s growing diplomatic engagement with Northern and Eastern Europe, signaling new opportunities for cooperation, investment, and shared progress.

As both Ghana and Latvia demonstrate mutual interest in closer relations, the future holds promising prospects for expanded collaboration that will benefit citizens of both nations.
