The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has officially announced a change in the date for the upcoming National Sanitation Day exercise within the metropolis.

In a press release issued by its Public Relations Unit, the Assembly stated that Saturday, February 28, 2026, has been designated for the sanitation exercise instead of the earlier scheduled date of Saturday, March 7, 2026.

The adjustment, according to the statement, has become necessary due to the 69th Independence Anniversary celebrations, which will be observed nationwide on Friday, March 6, 2026.

The Assembly explained that the rescheduling is intended to avoid a clash of major civic activities and to ensure full participation by residents, institutions, and businesses across the metropolis.
Exercise to Begin at 6:00 a.m.
As is customary, the clean-up exercise will commence at 6:00 a.m. and conclude at 12:00 noon. The Assembly is calling on residents, educational institutions, market women and traders, transport operators, and corporate bodies to actively take part in the exercise to promote environmental cleanliness and public health.
National Sanitation Day, a monthly initiative aimed at improving environmental hygiene, has become a key component of Kumasi’s efforts to address waste management challenges and reduce sanitation-related diseases. The KMA has consistently emphasized that maintaining a clean city is a shared responsibility that requires collective commitment.
Restrictions on Commercial Vehicles
To ensure the smooth execution of the exercise, the Assembly has announced that commercial vehicles will not be permitted to operate within specified operational areas during the designated hours.
The affected areas include:
Bantama Market
Racecourse Market
Komfo Anokye Roundabout to Bekwai Roundabout
Sofoline Interchange to Abrepo Junction through Komfo Anokye Roundabout
The temporary restriction is expected to minimize traffic congestion and create a safe environment for participants to undertake the clean-up activities effectively.
Call for Compliance
The KMA has urged all residents and stakeholders to comply fully with the directive and demonstrate civic responsibility by participating in the exercise. The Assembly expressed optimism that corporate institutions, commercial drivers, traders, and households will cooperate to make the exercise successful.
Environmental sanitation remains a critical concern in many urban centers, and city authorities believe sustained community participation is essential to achieving long-term cleanliness and improved public health outcomes.
The statement concluded by appealing to all media houses to support the dissemination of the information to ensure widespread awareness ahead of the February 28 exercise.

With this rescheduling, the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly reaffirms its commitment to maintaining Kumasi’s reputation as a clean and organized city while encouraging citizens to play their part in building a healthier environment for all.
