After more than a decade of malfunction and growing public concern, the long-defunct traffic light at Poku Transport has finally been repaired and restored to full operation, bringing renewed hope for improved road safety and traffic management in the area.
The signal system, located within the bustling Oforikrom municipality, had remained non-functional for years, creating a dangerous intersection that residents say contributed to numerous road accidents, some of them fatal. For commuters and pedestrians alike, navigating the junction became a daily risk, with motorists relying largely on guesswork, hand signals, and occasional police intervention to manage the flow of traffic.
The recent restoration follows a swift intervention by the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Oforikrom, Anwel Sadat Ahmed, whose office prioritized the issue amid increasing calls from the public for urgent action.
Speaking to the media after the repair works were completed, the MCE emphasized the importance of responsive leadership and proactive governance in addressing critical infrastructure challenges. He noted that the state of the traffic light had long been a concern, not only for road users but also for local authorities aware of its safety implications.
“For years, this intersection posed a serious threat to lives and property. Fixing this traffic light is not just about easing congestion—it is about protecting lives,” he stated.
Residents and drivers in the area have welcomed the development, describing it as long overdue. Many recounted the difficulties they faced during the period of neglect, citing frequent near-misses, confusion during peak hours, and the absence of a reliable traffic control system.
Commercial drivers, in particular, expressed relief at the restoration. “We’ve been struggling here for years. Sometimes you spend several minutes just trying to cross safely. Now, things are more orderly,” said one driver who frequents the route.
Urban planning experts have consistently highlighted the role of functional traffic systems in reducing accidents, improving efficiency, and enhancing overall urban mobility. The Poku Transport case, they argue, underscores the broader need for routine maintenance and timely intervention in public infrastructure across Ghana.
While the repair has been widely applauded, some residents are urging authorities to ensure that maintenance mechanisms are put in place to prevent a recurrence of such prolonged neglect. They also called for similar attention to other faulty traffic signals within the municipality and beyond.
The restoration of the Poku Transport traffic light is being seen as a significant step toward safer roads in Oforikrom. For many, it represents not just the fixing of a faulty signal, but a renewed commitment by local authorities to prioritize public safety and respond effectively to community concerns.
