The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has officially announced Saturday, May 2, 2026, as National Sanitation Day, calling on residents, businesses, and institutions across the metropolis to participate in a citywide clean-up exercise aimed at promoting environmental cleanliness and public health.

In a statement released on April 24, 2026, the Assembly said the initiative forms part of the government’s broader agenda to ensure a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable Ghana.

The exercise is expected to reinforce collective responsibility among citizens while addressing persistent sanitation challenges in the city.
According to the KMA, the clean-up activity will commence at 6:00 a.m. and conclude at 12:00 noon. During this period, all shops and trading activities are expected to remain closed to allow full participation. The Assembly emphasized that the success of the exercise hinges on the active involvement of all segments of society, including residents, schools, corporate organizations, and market operators.
To ensure the smooth execution of the exercise, the Assembly has also announced restrictions on commercial vehicular movement within key operational zones. The affected areas include the stretch from Santasi Roundabout through Santasi Market to Anyinam, near the Champion Hotel area; the frontage of Asafo Market extending through the VIP Bus Terminal to the Cement Roundabout; the corridor from Asokwa GRA Traffic Light to Abinkyi Market; routes from Asokwa GRA Office to LLL; and the A-Life area to the Labour Roundabout.
The directive, according to the Assembly, is intended to create a safe and obstruction-free environment for participants and sanitation teams to effectively carry out the exercise.

The KMA further encouraged organized groups, civil society organizations, and private institutions interested in contributing to the clean-up effort to coordinate with the Environmental Health Unit for guidance and logistical support.

The Assembly identified the Head of the unit, Mr. Kwaku Poku, as the contact person for such engagements.

Authorities expressed confidence that residents and stakeholders will comply fully with the directive, noting that sustained sanitation efforts are critical to preventing disease outbreaks, improving urban aesthetics, and enhancing the overall quality of life in the metropolis.

The announcement comes at a time when urban sanitation remains a pressing concern in many parts of Ghana, with local authorities intensifying campaigns to encourage proper waste management practices and community participation in clean-up exercises.

The KMA reiterated its commitment to maintaining a clean city and urged all citizens to treat the National Sanitation Day not merely as a routine exercise, but as a civic duty essential to the development and wellbeing of Kumasi.

The statement was issued by the Public Relations Unit of the Assembly and circulated to media houses across the region.
