Parliamentary Committee, Ashanti Minister Intensify Fight Against Illegal Mining and Environmental Degradation

The Parliamentary Select Committee on Lands and Natural Resources has reaffirmed its commitment to addressing environmental challenges in the country following a meeting with the Ashanti Regional Minister,Dr Frank Amoakohene, at the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council yesterday .

The meeting focused on pressing environmental concerns affecting the Ashanti Region, including bushfires, illegal mining activities, illegal chainsaw operations, timber logging, land reclamation, and afforestation initiatives aimed at restoring degraded lands.

Speaking during the engagement, Dr. Amoakohene stressed the importance of collaborative efforts in protecting the nation’s natural resources and safeguarding the environment for future generations.

He also used the occasion to commend the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources for his strong support and active collaboration in the ongoing fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, as well as reclamation efforts across the region.

According to the Regional Minister, protecting forests, lands, and water bodies requires a collective approach involving government agencies, local authorities, traditional leaders, and community stakeholders.

The Parliamentary Select Committee on Lands and Natural Resources reiterated its commitment to supporting policies and interventions that promote sustainable development and environmental conservation across the country.

The engagement forms part of broader national efforts to combat environmental degradation and ensure the sustainable management of Ghana’s natural resources.
