President John Dramani Mahama has officially cut sod for the construction of 10,067 housing units at Dedesua in the Bosomtwi District of the Ashanti Region, in what government describes as a major intervention aimed at addressing Ghana’s growing housing deficit.

The housing project, being undertaken by the State Housing Company, is expected to provide affordable and decent accommodation for thousands of Ghanaian families while boosting infrastructure and economic development within the district and the Ashanti Region at large.

The sod-cutting ceremony today drew a large crowd of government officials, traditional authorities, assembly members, housing stakeholders, party executives, and residents who gathered to witness the commencement of the ambitious residential development project.

Addressing the gathering, President Mahama underscored the importance of housing in improving the welfare and dignity of citizens, noting that access to quality housing remains one of the government’s top priorities.

He stated that the project forms part of broader national efforts to reduce the housing shortfall and improve living standards across the country.

According to the President, the rapid increase in urban population and demand for accommodation require bold and strategic investments in the housing sector. He explained that the Dedesua housing project would serve as a model for future housing developments intended to support low and middle-income earners.

President Mahama further indicated that the initiative would create employment opportunities for contractors, artisans, engineers, suppliers, and hundreds of young people during the construction phase. He added that the project would also stimulate local economic activities and contribute significantly to the development of surrounding communities.

He assured Ghanaians that government remains committed to partnering with private investors and relevant institutions to expand access to affordable housing nationwide.

The Ashanti Regional leadership reaffirmed the region’s readiness to support government’s transformational development agenda, particularly initiatives that seek to improve infrastructure and living conditions for the people.

Regional authorities described the housing project as a significant boost to the socio-economic development of the Bosomtwi District and the Ashanti Region, adding that the project would help address accommodation challenges facing many residents.

Traditional leaders in the area welcomed the initiative and commended government for selecting Dedesua for the massive housing development. They expressed optimism that the project would bring lasting economic and social benefits to the district through improved roads, utilities, sanitation, and other essential services.

Residents who attended the ceremony also expressed excitement over the project, saying the development has the potential to transform the area into a modern and vibrant community.

The planned housing units are expected to include a combination of apartments, detached and semi-detached houses, alongside supporting facilities such as schools, health centres, recreational spaces, and commercial areas to ensure a well-planned and sustainable community.

The commencement of the 10,067 housing units project marks another major step in government’s efforts to bridge the housing gap while promoting national development through large-scale infrastructure investment.
