The Ashanti Regional branch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has strongly dismissed allegations that the Ashanti Regional Minister was involved in the illegal use of electricity at a property in Ahinsan, describing the claims as false, malicious and politically motivated.
In a statement issued on June 5, 2026, and signed by the Ashanti Regional Organiser and Regional Political Coordinator of the NDC, Mr Isham Alhassan, the party said reports aired by Wontumi Radio alleging that the Regional Minister was “stealing electrical power” were baseless and intended to damage his reputation.
According to the statement, officials of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) did visit the premises in question, but the visit formed part of a routine inspection exercise and was not triggered by any suspected illegal activity.
The NDC explained that the apartment had been rented by the party ahead of the 2024 general elections for operational purposes and that the tenancy agreement remained valid.
“The premises therefore remain in use by the NDC,” the statement noted.
The party further clarified that the property does not belong to the Ashanti Regional Minister, stressing that ECG records and billing information could readily establish the identity of the rightful owner.
“The Minister has no ownership, management or control over the electrical installation or operations of the premises,” the statement said.
Addressing the allegation of power theft, the NDC maintained that no illegal electrical connection had been made at the property and that all electricity consumed was properly metered and billed by ECG.
The party challenged Wontumi Radio and any individual claiming to possess evidence of an illegal connection to make such evidence public and submit it to ECG and the appropriate security agencies for investigation.
The statement described allegations made without proof as irresponsible and inconsistent with the principles of professional journalism.
Mr Alhassan also declared his readiness to publicly debate the matter on any credible media platform, saying facts and evidence should guide public discourse.
The NDC urged media organisations to uphold the principles of fairness, balance and accuracy in their reportage, cautioning against the publication and broadcast of defamatory content.
The statement concluded that the Ashanti Regional Minister remained focused on his responsibilities and would not be distracted by what it described as unfounded allegations aimed at undermining his work and commitment to the development of the Ashanti Region.
It further warned that legal action could be pursued should the allegations continue without evidence.
