The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Ahafo Ano South West, Hon. Abubakar Sedik, has commissioned and officially handed over four(4) newly constructed institutional latrine facilities to selected basic schools in the District as part of efforts to improve sanitation and create a healthier learning environment for pupils.

The beneficiary schools are Wioso D/A JHS and Primary, Barniekrom D/A JHS and Primary, Kunsu D/A JHS and Primary, and Afresini D/A JHS and Primary. Each school also received supplies of toilet rolls, tissues and liquid soap to promote hygiene and support the proper use of the facilities.

Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, Hon. Sedik noted that one of the pressing challenges he identified upon assuming office was the inadequate sanitation infrastructure in many schools across the District. He explained that the situation demanded immediate intervention to safeguard the health and dignity of both pupils and teachers.

According to the DCE, the project was made possible through funding from the District Assemblies Common Fund and forms part of a broader agenda to enhance educational infrastructure and public health. He revealed that additional sanitation projects would be implemented to extend similar facilities to other schools that remain underserved.

Hon. Sedik urged teachers, Assembly Members, parents, and students to take collective responsibility for maintaining the newly commissioned facilities. He emphasised the importance of keeping the toilets clean, ensuring regular maintenance, and preventing unauthorised use by members of the public to preserve them for future generations.

The DCE also highlighted the inclusive nature of the project, noting that the facilities have been designed with accessibility features to accommodate students with disabilities. He described this as a significant step toward ensuring that every child has access to safe and dignified sanitation regardless of physical ability.

Also addressing the gathering, the District Director of Education, Justin Kwesi Gbotor, announced that management committees would be established in the beneficiary schools to oversee the maintenance and proper use of the facilities. He emphasised that effective supervision and shared responsibility would help ensure the project’s long-term sustainability.

Mr Gbotor further encouraged students to cultivate good hygiene practices and take ownership of the facilities by keeping them clean at all times. He reminded them that maintaining a clean environment would contribute to better health outcomes and a more conducive atmosphere for teaching and learning.
