The Member of Parliament for Amenfi Central in the Western Region,Hon. Joana Gyan Cudjoe, has intensified efforts to promote responsible mining and environmental sustainability by spearheading a tree-planting and land reclamation campaign in mining communities within the constituency.
The initiative, aimed at restoring degraded lands and encouraging environmentally friendly mining practices, brought together community members, environmental advocates and volunteers who planted trees along reclaimed mining sites.
Speaking during the exercise, the MP stressed that economic development through mining must not come at the expense of the environment. She said protecting forests, rivers and farmlands was essential to securing the livelihoods of future generations.
“Our natural resources are a blessing, but they must be managed responsibly. Green mining and land reclamation are not optional—they are necessary if we are to preserve our environment while creating jobs and wealth,” she said.
Hon. Joana Gyan Cudjoe urged miners operating in the area to adopt sustainable mining methods and ensure that lands affected by mining activities were restored after operations.
She noted that the campaign forms part of a broader environmental agenda to transform Amenfi Central into a model constituency for responsible mining and ecological conservation.
The MP also called on traditional authorities, youth groups and mining companies to support government efforts to combat illegal mining and protect the country’s natural resources.
Participants described the initiative as timely, saying it would help raise awareness about environmental protection while contributing to the restoration of degraded landscapes.
The event, held under the theme “Green Mining, Healthy Land, Brighter Future,” featured the planting of tree seedlings and public education on sustainable land management practices.
Residents expressed optimism that the programme would inspire more communities to embrace environmental conservation and ensure a greener and more sustainable future for Amenfi Central.
