The attention of the youth and residents of Asokwa has been drawn to comments by the Member of Parliament for Asokwa and Deputy Minority Leader, Hon. Patricia Appiagyei, indicating her intention to stop residents from watching football matches beneath the Asokwa Interchange over concerns of public safety.
Without doubt, public safety must always remain a priority. Any activity that poses a genuine risk to road users and pedestrians deserves careful attention. However, leadership demands that concerns be addressed with practical alternatives rather than outright restrictions.
It is regrettable that, at a time when the ongoing global football tournament has brought communities together across the country, the youth of Asokwa appear to be left without similar opportunities. In several constituencies, Members of Parliament and community leaders have taken proactive steps to establish safe viewing centres and organize community watch parties, enabling residents to enjoy the matches in a secure and well-coordinated environment.
The youth of Asokwa deserve no less. Rather than focusing solely on preventing football gatherings, efforts should be directed toward providing a safe and suitable venue where young people can enjoy the matches responsibly while ensuring the free flow of traffic and public safety.
We therefore respectfully call on Hon. Patricia Appiagyei to engage with stakeholders and support the establishment of designated viewing centres within the constituency. Such an approach would balance public safety with the legitimate desire of the youth and residents to participate in this global sporting celebration.
The youth of Asokwa are not seeking confrontation. They seek inclusion, support, and leadership that responds to their aspirations with constructive solutions.
Together, let us build an Asokwa where safety and opportunity go hand in hand.
