Strong Bones, Strong Life: Dr Prince Nelson Mortoti Advocates Early Action Against Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis has become one of the silent health conditions affecting millions of people worldwide, yet many individuals remain unaware they have the disease until they suffer a painful fracture. Health experts warn that as Ghana’s population continues to age, bone-related diseases are likely to become more common, making awareness, prevention and early intervention more important than ever.

The Chief Executive Officer of PIWAK Natural Health, Dr Prince Nelson Mortoti, has therefore called on Ghanaians to prioritise bone health by adopting healthy lifestyles and making informed nutritional choices to reduce their risk of osteoporosis.

According to Dr Mortoti, osteoporosis is a condition in which the bones gradually lose their strength and density, making them weak, porous and susceptible to fractures. He explained that the disease is often described as a “silent disease” because bone loss occurs slowly over many years without obvious symptoms.

“Many people discover they have osteoporosis only after suffering fractures of the hip, wrist or spine. Unfortunately, by then, considerable bone damage may already have occurred,” he said.
He explained that osteoporosis affects both men and women but is particularly common among post-menopausal women due to hormonal changes that accelerate bone loss.

Older adults, smokers, heavy alcohol consumers, physically inactive individuals and people whose diets are deficient in calcium and vitamin D are also at increased risk.

Health implications.

Dr Mortoti noted that osteoporosis can have serious consequences for individuals, families and the healthcare system.

He said weakened bones significantly increase the risk of fractures, especially in the hips, spine and wrists. Such injuries may lead to prolonged hospitalisation, disability, chronic pain, loss of independence and reduced quality of life.
In severe cases, especially among the elderly, hip fractures may result in permanent disability and increase the risk of other health complications.
He added that spinal fractures could cause loss of height, stooped posture, persistent back pain and reduced mobility, making everyday activities increasingly difficult.
“Strong bones are essential for healthy ageing. Prevention is always better than treatment,” he emphasised.
Prevention remains the best defence
Dr Mortoti encouraged Ghanaians to adopt preventive measures by consuming balanced diets rich in calcium, vitamin D and other essential nutrients, engaging in regular weight-bearing exercises such as walking, avoiding smoking, limiting excessive alcohol intake and attending routine medical check-ups.
He also advised older adults and people with a family history of osteoporosis to consult healthcare professionals for appropriate screening and medical advice.
Supporting bone health naturally
Speaking on natural wellness, Dr Mortoti said PIWAK Natural Health continues to promote healthy living through its flagship product, 3P Garlic Mixture.
According to him, the product is prepared from carefully selected garlic and is rich in naturally occurring compounds with antioxidant properties.
He explained that antioxidants help protect the body’s cells from oxidative stress, while garlic has traditionally been used to support general health and wellbeing.

Dr Mortoti said maintaining good blood circulation, reducing inflammation and supporting overall wellness are important components of healthy ageing, and that 3P Garlic Mixture can be incorporated as part of a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle.
He stressed that the product is intended to complement—not replace—a nutritious diet, regular exercise and professional medical care.
“We believe that good health begins with prevention. Natural nutrition, healthy habits and regular medical care work together to help people live stronger and healthier lives,” he stated.
A call for greater awareness
Dr Mortoti called on health institutions, community leaders and the media to intensify public education on osteoporosis to encourage early detection and healthier lifestyles.

He urged families to pay closer attention to the bone health of older relatives and to encourage regular exercise, proper nutrition and timely medical consultations.
He concluded that protecting bone health is an investment in long-term wellbeing and productive ageing.
