The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Tano South in the Ahafo Region, Emmanuel Kwame Frimpong, has reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to the fight against illegal mining (galamsey) following the deployment of the fourth batch of the Blue Water Guard personnel to protect rivers and other water bodies within the municipality.
The deployment exercise took place at Breme and brought together officials of the Minerals Commission, Assembly Members, traditional authorities (Nananom), and other stakeholders committed to safeguarding the municipality’s natural resources.
The Blue Water Guard initiative, which is being implemented under the theme “Fighting Against Illegal Mining,” is aimed at strengthening surveillance of rivers and water bodies to prevent the destructive activities of illegal miners whose operations continue to pose a serious threat to the country’s environment.
Speaking during the ceremony, Emmanuel Kwame Frimpong stressed that protecting the environment is a collective responsibility and called on residents to support the personnel in carrying out their duties effectively.
He noted that illegal mining has over the years caused extensive destruction to rivers, forests and farmlands, making it imperative for all stakeholders to unite in protecting the nation’s natural resources.
The MCE said the Tano South Municipal Assembly remains fully committed to supporting all government initiatives aimed at combating illegal mining and ensuring the sustainable management of the environment.
According to him, the deployment of the fourth batch of the Blue Water Guard demonstrates government’s resolve to intensify efforts to preserve water bodies for both present and future generations.
Officials from the Minerals Commission encouraged the newly deployed officers to discharge their responsibilities with professionalism, integrity and dedication, emphasizing that their work would play a significant role in preserving clean water sources and restoring public confidence in the fight against environmental degradation.
Traditional authorities present at the event also pledged their support, urging communities to cooperate with the Blue Water Guard personnel by providing information that would help prevent illegal mining activities in their localities.
The Assembly Members likewise assured the team of their readiness to collaborate with security agencies, community leaders and residents to ensure the success of the programme..
The Blue Water Guard initiative forms part of government’s broader strategy to tackle illegal mining, restore polluted rivers, and promote environmental sustainability across the country.
