Residents of Boatengkrom in the Ahafo Ano South West District of the Ashanti Region are set to benefit from improved sanitation following the sod-cutting ceremony for the construction of a modern 16-seater public toilet facility.
The project, jointly financed by the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Ahafo Ano South West, Hon. Abubakar Sedik, and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Constituency Chairman, Mr. Koo Broni, with additional support from the Kunsuhene, Nana Dr. Agyemang Badu Duah I, is expected to end years of sanitation challenges confronting the community.
The initiative forms part of efforts by the District Assembly and local leadership to improve sanitation, public health and the living conditions of residents.
Addressing community members during the sod-cutting ceremony, Hon. Abubakar Sedik disclosed that the absence of a public toilet facility was one of the key concerns raised by residents during the 2024 election campaign.
According to him, the commencement of the project is a clear demonstration of the government’s determination to honour promises made to the electorate.
He explained that the project reflects the NDC government’s commitment to improving the welfare of rural communities through the provision of essential social infrastructure.
More Development Projects
The DCE assured residents that the toilet facility would not be the only development project earmarked for Boatengkrom.
He announced that the Ahafo Ano South West District Assembly would soon begin the construction of a Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) Compound to provide accessible healthcare services to residents.
Hon. Sedik further revealed that the Assembly would also construct a borehole to provide the community with safe and reliable drinking water, noting that access to potable water remains critical to improving public health.
He urged residents to continue supporting the Assembly’s development agenda and to take ownership of projects undertaken in the community by ensuring their proper maintenance.
Commitment to Development
Speaking at the event, the NDC Constituency Chairman, Mr. Koo Broni, reaffirmed his commitment to supporting initiatives that improve the lives of people across the constituency.
He expressed appreciation to residents for their unwavering support for the NDC and pledged to continue working closely with the District Assembly and traditional authorities to bring more development projects to deprived communities.
Mr. Koo Broni, however, appealed to the government to prioritise the rehabilitation and tarring of the Kunsu-Abasua road.
He observed that the poor condition of the road continues to hinder economic activities, transportation and access to essential services, stressing that improving the road network would significantly enhance socio-economic development in the area.
Traditional Leaders Express Gratitude
On behalf of the chiefs and people of Boatengkrom, the Gyasehene, Nana Kweku Dwomo, thanked Hon. Abubakar Sedik, Mr. Koo Broni, the NDC Constituency Executives and all stakeholders for responding positively to the community’s long-standing sanitation concerns.
He described the construction of the toilet facility as a major milestone in the history of Boatengkrom, saying it would greatly improve environmental sanitation and help reduce open defecation.
While expressing appreciation for the intervention, Nana Kweku Dwomo appealed to the government to also rehabilitate the community’s road network to facilitate transportation, improve access to markets and stimulate economic growth.
Community Optimistic
The sod-cutting ceremony attracted traditional rulers, NDC Constituency and Branch Executives, opinion leaders, youth groups, residents and other dignitaries.
Participants expressed confidence that the completion of the 16-seater toilet facility would significantly improve sanitation standards, protect public health and enhance the quality of life in Boatengkrom.
Residents also welcomed the DCE’s announcement of the planned CHPS Compound and borehole projects, describing them as interventions that would address some of the community’s most pressing developmental needs.
