The Akatsi District Office of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has emerged as the second best performing scheme in the Volta Region for the 2025 financial year, recording an outstanding 187 per cent achievement of its Universal Health Coverage (UHC) target.

The remarkable performance has been widely attributed to the leadership and administrative competence of the District Manager, Mr. Francis Dotsey Bedzo, whose stewardship continues to attract commendation from both health sector stakeholders and residents.

The award was presented at a colourful ceremony held in Ho by Mr. Sebastian Alapunlinsa, Director of Membership and Regional Operations (MRO) at the NHIA Head Office.

Addressing participants, Mr. Alapunlinsa praised the Akatsi office for its consistency, innovation and results-driven approach, noting that the district’s performance stands out as one of the most impressive in the region.

Observers and stakeholders have particularly highlighted Mr. Bedzo’s proactive leadership style, strategic mobilization efforts and strong engagement with communities, which have significantly contributed to the expansion of NHIS coverage across the district.

Beyond his administrative role, Mr. Bedzo, who also serves as the Acting Constituency Secretary of the Akatsi South National Democratic Congress (NDC), is increasingly being recognised for aligning public service delivery with grassroots mobilisation, a factor many believe is driving renewed public confidence in the scheme.

Residents in the municipality have expressed satisfaction with the improved accessibility and responsiveness of NHIS services under his leadership, describing the recognition as “well-deserved.”

The achievement reinforces Akatsi’s growing status as a model district in the implementation of Ghana’s National Health Insurance Scheme and highlights the impact of effective local leadership in advancing national health policy objectives.
