Hon. Vincent Ekow Assafuah Ranking Member, Youth and Sports Committee of Parliament and MP for Old Tafo Constituency has raised serious concerns over what he describes as a potential visa racketeering scheme involving over 500 supporters of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

According to the MP, the individuals were allegedly sent to the UK Visa Application Centre (VFS) under the pretense of attending the upcoming “Unity Match” a sporting event involving Ghana, Nigeria, Jamaica, and Trinidad & Tobago. The process, he claims, was allegedly facilitated through the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

“This appears to be a well-coordinated visa racketeering scheme masked as sports tourism,” Hon. Assafuah stated. “We must not allow partisan interests to exploit international sporting events to engage in such underhand dealings.”

Hon. Assafuah has warned that Ghana’s international reputation and diplomatic relations could suffer if the claims prove true.

More details are expected to emerge in the coming days.
