In the midst of this GETFund brouhaha, it is important we don’t loose sight of the fact that most these beneficiaries are still here in our Country engaged in Public Service. Mr.Mensah Thompson , executive director of Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability (ASEPA) has said.
“What we want the Auditor General to do is to surcharge them, convert their GETfund benefits into Student Loan allocations instead, spread the payment Monthly for one year and deduct it directly from the salaries of these Members of Parliament, Ministers and other Government officials.
Those who have the capacity to repay full amount at once must be given the option to do so, so we can retrieve some money for the fund.
We must also NOT forget that the Securitisation of the Getfund by the current Government is even much worse than the scholarship benefits these Government officials took undeservedly.
This has drastically reduced the amount of money usually made available for other Getfund activities such as the improvement in Educational Infrastructure and Scholarships.
So as we demand the surcharge and retrieval of these undeserved scholarships from beneficiaries, we must also put pressure on government to terminate the securitisation of the GETfund to reduce the pressure on the fund to open up the space for more investment in scholarships that needy Ghanaian students can benefit from.
The current awarding scheme for GETfund scholarships would also need major restructuring and if possible further Legislation to give more priority to the poor and ordinary Ghanaian students.
