A former Operations Director of the Youth Wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr Kwadwo Bamba, has declared that a presidential ticket comprising former Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia and former running mate Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO) is inevitable for the party ahead of the 2028 general election.
According to him, no amount of internal opposition or alleged smear campaigns against Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh would prevent him from being selected as Dr Bawumia’s running mate if the former Vice-President leads the party into the next presidential election.
Mr Bamba alleged that some individuals within the party were working to tarnish Dr Opoku Prempeh’s image by circulating claims that he supported Kennedy Agyapong during the NPP’s presidential primaries ahead of the 2024 elections.
He described the allegations as false and politically motivated, insisting that Dr Opoku Prempeh was chosen as the party’s running mate based on his competence, experience and longstanding commitment to the NPP.
Mr Bamba said Dr Opoku Prempeh had “paid his dues” to the party and remained the best person to partner Dr Bawumia in the 2028 elections.
He further argued that a Bawumia-Napo ticket would provide the NPP with its strongest chance of reclaiming political power from the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Mr Bamba, who has declared his intention to contest for the position of National Vice-Chairman of the NPP, said his ambition was closely linked to the party’s electoral success, adding that it would be meaningless to occupy a national executive position if the party failed to win the 2028 elections.
He also warned that supporters of Dr Opoku Prempeh were aware of what he described as attempts by some party members to undermine the former running mate.
“We are aware of those within the party who are sabotaging Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh. If they do not stop, we will expose them publicly,” he said.
The allegations made by Mr Bamba could not be independently verified, and no response had been obtained from those he accused at the time this report was filed.
