Former Energy Minister, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has refuted claims made by Bright Simons, Honorary Vice President of Policy Think-tank, Imani-Africa, regarding the unitisation directive between Springfield Exploration and Production Limited and Eni Ghana Exploration and Production Limited .

According to Dr. Prempeh, the directive was issued in 2020, when he was serving as Education Minister, not Energy Minister. He assumed office as Energy Minister on March 7, 2021.

Dr. Prempeh’s office described Simons’ attribution as “untrue” and demanded a retraction and apology.

They emphasized that opinions on government decisions should be expressed with accuracy and decorum .

The controversy surrounds the withdrawal of the unitisation directive by the current government, which was criticized by Simons as a “bizarre order” issued by Dr. Prempeh.

However, Dr. Prempeh’s office clarified that he was not the Energy Minister at the time the directive was issued .
