Ghana’s Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, has called on beneficiaries of scholarships from the Japan International Cooperation Agency to take a leading role in advancing national development by applying the knowledge, discipline, and values acquired during their training in Japan.
Delivering a keynote address at the maiden National General Meeting of the JICA Alumni Association of Ghana in Accra, Mr Debrah emphasised that Ghana’s transformation depends not only on policy direction but also on the mindset and work ethic of its people. He noted that Japan’s remarkable development story offers valuable lessons, particularly in the areas of discipline, integrity, and commitment to excellence.
“Ghana stands to benefit immensely if we adopt these principles in our daily lives and professional duties,” he stated, urging alumni to become ambassadors of these ideals within their respective sectors.
Drawing from his personal experience, Mr Debrah recounted his participation in a 2011 African delegation to Japan focused on sustainable tourism. He explained that the exposure significantly shaped his perspectives on governance and policy implementation, adding that the lessons learned continue to influence his work at the highest level of government.
The Chief of Staff further charged the newly inaugurated leadership of JAAGHA to take proactive steps in harnessing the vast pool of expertise within the alumni network. According to him, the Association is uniquely positioned to support Ghana’s development agenda through innovative ideas, strategic collaboration, and practical solutions to national challenges.
The meeting marked a historic milestone for the Association, featuring the adoption of a new constitution and the inauguration of a six-member executive team tasked with steering its affairs. It also provided a vibrant platform for members to reconnect, exchange knowledge, and showcase the impact of their Japanese training across various professional fields.
In remarks delivered on behalf of Japan’s Ambassador to Ghana, Hiroshi Yoshimoto, the enduring relationship between Ghana and Japan was highlighted as a cornerstone of mutual progress and cooperation. The Ambassador noted that the partnership, which dates back to 1957, has yielded significant achievements in sectors such as agriculture, education, infrastructure, and human resource development.
He reaffirmed Japan’s unwavering commitment to Ghana’s growth and described JICA alumni as vital partners in sustaining and deepening the strong bilateral ties between the two nations.
President of JAAGHA, Olivia Afoakwa, also called for renewed enthusiasm within the alumni network. She urged members to strengthen collaboration, actively engage in national discourse, and leverage their shared experiences to drive meaningful change.
Ms Afoakwa emphasised that the Association holds immense potential to foster innovation, influence policy direction, and create opportunities through strategic partnerships. She encouraged members to remain united and purpose-driven in their collective efforts to contribute to Ghana’s socio-economic advancement.
The meeting concluded with insightful discussions on leadership priorities and practical strategies to mobilise alumni expertise in support of Ghana’s development. Participants expressed optimism that the strengthened Association would play a pivotal role in shaping policies and initiatives that drive sustainable growth.
As Ghana continues its journey toward transformation, the call for skilled and globally exposed citizens to step forward and contribute meaningfully has never been more urgent. The renewed commitment of JICA alumni, backed by strong leadership and international partnerships, signals a promising step toward achieving the nation’s long-term development goals.
