In a decisive move to bridge classroom learning with real-life health awareness, the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has endorsed a nationwide sensitisation initiative spearheaded by the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), aimed at deepening students’ understanding of Ghana’s health insurance system.
The initiative, dubbed the Inter-Regional NHIS Quiz Competition, was formally presented during a high-level meeting between the Minister and the Chief Executive of NHIA, Dr Victor Asare Bampoe, alongside a distinguished delegation of senior officials. The engagement marked a significant convergence of education policy and public health advocacy, setting the tone for a programme that seeks to transform knowledge into practical health consciousness among the youth.
Accompanying the NHIA Chief Executive were Deputy Chief Executive Raphael Segkpeb, Acting Corporate Affairs Director Oswald Essuah-Mensah, Acting Deputy Director Hamdia Amadu Yakubu, Corporate Communications Head Faustina Dery, and a team of senior officers including Hannatu Adam Mustapha, Judge Opoku Sarkodie, Abdul Karim Naatogmah, Issac Boamah-Darko, Akyaa Adriana Afriyie, Ebenezer Nyarko Danso, and Sylvester Adotei Pappoe.
A National Classroom Beyond Walls
The Inter-Regional NHIS Quiz Competition, conceptualised by the NHIA’s Corporate Affairs Directorate in collaboration with its Provider and Client Relations Unit, is designed to run from May through November 2026. The programme will traverse two regions each month, drawing participation from three Senior High Schools in each of the country’s sixteen regions.
At its core, the competition will challenge students on critical aspects of the NHIS, including the Benefit Package, member responsibilities, exemption policies, and the broader role of health insurance in achieving Universal Health Coverage.
Officials describe the initiative as more than a contest—it is a strategic educational intervention aimed at embedding health literacy within Ghana’s youth. By engaging students through competition, organisers hope to cultivate a generation that not only understands the NHIS but actively participates in and advocates for it.
Education Meets Health Policy
In endorsing the programme, Hon. Iddrisu charged the Ghana Education Service (GES) to take a leading role in coordinating its implementation across schools nationwide. He emphasised that the initiative aligns with the government’s broader agenda of integrating practical knowledge into academic curricula.
“This is not merely a quiz,” the Minister noted. “It is a transformation—of education into empowerment, and of awareness into action. When students understand the value of health insurance, they become ambassadors of wellbeing within their families and communities.”
The Minister further highlighted the importance of early sensitisation in sustaining enrolment and ensuring long-term participation in the NHIS, particularly among younger populations.
Driving Universal Health Coverage
The NHIA leadership underscored that the initiative forms part of a wider strategy to strengthen public engagement with the Scheme and advance Ghana’s commitment to Universal Health Coverage.
Dr Bampoe commended the Ministry for its support, noting that collaboration with the education sector presents a powerful avenue for nationwide behavioural change. He reiterated that empowering students with accurate information about the NHIS would lead to increased enrolment, improved compliance, and enhanced public trust in the system.
The programme also complements key government interventions such as the Free Primary Health Care policy and the Mahama Cares Ghana Medical Trust Fund—both of which are aimed at expanding access to quality healthcare services across the country.
A Vision for the Future
As preparations begin for the maiden edition of the quiz competition, stakeholders are optimistic that the initiative will leave a lasting impact. By transforming classrooms into platforms for public health education, the programme represents a forward-thinking approach to governance—one that recognises the interconnectedness of knowledge, policy, and national development.
Indeed, as education and health policy converge through this initiative, Ghana edges closer to a future where informed citizens actively participate in safeguarding their own wellbeing—bringing the nation nearer to the enduring promise of health for all.
