For over a month, three nursing mothers sat trapped at the Ketu South Municipal Hospital, unable to settle their medical bills and return home with their newborns. Their stories were filled with pain, rejection, and hopelessness—until the Tanko Foundation, in collaboration with the Duamenefa Foundation, stepped in to rewrite their narratives.
At a heartwarming donation ceremony, the Tanko Foundation not only cleared the debts that held the mothers captive but also gave them a lifeline through the provision of essential items, including rice, baby food, diapers, toiletries, and an undisclosed amount of cash.
One of the mothers, who preferred to remain anonymous, narrated her ordeal with tears in her eyes. “The father of my baby abandoned me, leaving everything on my shoulders. I felt so hopeless, stuck here without knowing how I could ever leave. The Tanko Foundation didn’t just pay my bills—they gave me and my child a second chance at life. I am forever grateful.”
Emmanuel Atokple, a representative of the Tanko Foundation, explained the foundation’s motivation to intervene. “Our founder, Gabriel Kwamigah Tanko Atokple, believes in supporting the less privileged. When we heard about these mothers’ struggles, we knew we had to act. Clearing their bills and providing items to ease their transition back home is part of our commitment to giving back, especially during this festive season,” he said.
But the act of kindness didn’t end there. The foundation also extended its generosity to the children’s ward of the hospital, donating food and drinks to bring joy to the little ones and their families. This, they said, was part of their mission to spread love and hope during the New Year festivities.
The Administrator of the Ketu South Municipal Hospital, Alex Hlotsi, praised the foundation for its timely intervention. “This gesture has relieved both the mothers and the hospital of a great burden. However, we continue to appeal for more support, particularly to establish a much-needed dental unit for our facility. We have the space, but we lack the equipment and resources to make it a reality.”
The Tanko Foundation’s unwavering commitment to supporting the vulnerable in society has brought smiles to countless faces in the Volta Region. For these three mothers, the foundation’s intervention was more than just charity—it was a rescue mission that brought hope where there was despair.
As the mothers left the hospital with their newborns, their hearts were filled with gratitude and relief. Their journey serves as a powerful reminder of the transformative power of compassion and the critical role of philanthropy in addressing societal challenges.
The Tanko Foundation has once again proven that with the right support, even the most difficult circumstances can be turned around. In their own words, “We are here to ensure no one is left behind, especially when they need us the most.”
