The Deputy Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Hon. Richard Gyan-MY, has reaffirmed the country’s commitment to accelerating energy access and implementing urgent sector reforms.
Speaking at the Mission 300 Ghana Compact Review Workshop in Accra, Hon. Gyan-Mensah emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts to achieve universal energy access and a resilient energy sector.
The workshop, organized with support from Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL), brought together key stakeholders from government, development institutions, civil society, and the private sector to review Ghana’s draft National Energy Compact. The compact is a blueprint for equitable energy access, renewable energy expansion, and a resilient energy sector.
Hon. Gyan-Mensah highlighted the pressing financial challenges facing the energy sector, citing a US$2 billion annual shortfall. He called for comprehensive reforms across the energy value chain, rather than relying solely on electricity tariff increases. The Deputy Minister disclosed that Cabinet has approved private sector participation through multiple concessions in electricity distribution, which could help reduce the sector’s shortfalls.
The workshop aims to refine the draft Compact’s strategic priorities, identify risks, synergies, and delivery models, and strengthen alignment across sectors for effective implementation. Hon. Gyan-Mensah urged participants to engage openly and constructively, stressing that the goal is not just a refined compact but renewed momentum towards universal energy access.
Mission 300 is a continental initiative aimed at connecting 300 million Africans to electricity by 2030. Ghana has joined the second cohort of participating countries and is currently finalizing its National Energy Compact ahead of its presentation at the next African Energy Summit.
Hon. Gyan-Mensah acknowledged the contributions of Ghana’s development partners, particularly SEforALL, the World Bank, and the African Development Bank, emphasizing that partnerships are crucial to achieving the goals of Mission 300. He concluded by urging participants to work together to turn the promise of Mission 300 into a reality for millions of Ghanaians.
The workshop is a significant step towards shaping Ghana’s energy future and achieving universal energy access. With the country’s commitment to energy sector reforms and the support of development partners, Ghana is poised to make significant progress in addressing its energy challenges.
