Ghana’s Mining Sector: A New Era of Responsibility and Sustainability-Mustapha Gbade

The government of President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated its commitment to ensuring that the mining sector operates in a responsible and sustainable manner.

According to Mr. Mustapha Gbande, Deputy Director in charge of Operations at the Jubilee House, the government aims to implement strict measures to make mining lucrative for all while prioritizing environmental sustainability.

Responsible Mining Practices.

Mr. Gbande emphasized that President Mahama is not against mining but wants to ensure that the sector operates in a way that benefits all Ghanaians.

During a stakeholders’ engagement in Amenfi Central, organized by Hon. Joana Gyan Cudjoe, Member of Parliament for Amenfi Central, in collaboration with the Amenfi Central District Assembly, Mr. Gbande stressed the importance of responsible mining practices.

Environmental Concerns.

The stakeholders’ consultation highlighted the need for miners to reclaim land after degradation, citing the dangers posed by abandoned mining pits. Mr. Gbande assured that the government would ensure miners adhere to environmental regulations, promoting responsible mining practices. The government has also reaffirmed its commitment to prohibiting mining in forests and water bodies, recognizing the importance of preserving these sensitive ecosystems.

Cooperative Mining.

The consultation emphasized the benefits of cooperative mining, which would enable miners to operate responsibly and reclaim land after mining.
