The government of Ghana has officially launched the Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme in Obuasi, Ashanti Region, as part of its efforts to promote responsible mining and provide a structured alternative to illegal mining activities.
The programme, unveiled by Dr. Frank Amoakohene, Ashanti Regional Minister, and Hon. Emmanuel Armah Kofi-Buah, Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, on behalf of the President, aims to organize small-scale miners into cooperatives, assign them specific concessions, and place them under the supervision of trained officers.
The initiative seeks to balance livelihoods with environmental stewardship, ensuring that mining is done sustainably with mandatory land reclamation.
The government has made it clear that any individual or group refusing to take advantage of this legal pathway and engaging in illegal mining will be deemed an enemy of the state and dealt with accordingly.
The programme reflects the government’s commitment to promoting responsible mining practices and protecting the environment. The launch of the Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme in Obuasi is expected to provide a structured alternative to illegal mining, promoting a future of dignity and prosperity for all.
