KMA Inaugurates District Implementation Committee Under SDG Smart Cities Programme

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly has taken a significant step towards promoting inclusive, resilient, and sustainable urban development with the inauguration of its District Implementation Committee (DIC) under the Ghana SDG Smart Cities Programme.

The ceremony, which marked the signing of a Participation Agreement, was attended by key stakeholders, including representatives from the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs (MLGCRA), UN-Habitat, and the Norwegian government.

The Ghana SDG Smart Cities Programme aims to accelerate the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the local level through data-driven planning, inclusive governance, and sustainable infrastructure development.

The programme focuses on improving public service delivery, addressing urban challenges, and enhancing climate resilience in selected Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in Ghana.

The DIC, comprising representatives from various departments of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, will play a critical role in ensuring the successful implementation of the programme. The committee’s key responsibilities include
– Ensuring strong coordination and ownership of the programme
– Tracking progress and identifying areas for improvement
– Ensuring transparency and accountability in the implementation process

In his inauguration remarks,Hon Richard Ofori Agyeman Boadi, Kumasi Mayor,representing the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, urged the DIC members to approach their responsibility with dedication and a sense of purpose.

He emphasized the importance of transparency, collaboration, and innovation in achieving the programme’s objectives.

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly’s vision is to develop Kumasi into a safe and vibrant city through good governance, local economic development, tourism promotion, improved sanitation, and infrastructure development .

The programme is part of a broader initiative to support MMDAs in Ghana in achieving the SDGs.

Ten assemblies, including Kumasi, Accra, Sekondi-Takoradi, Tamale, Obuasi, Techiman, Kyebi, Dzodze, Wenchi, and Elmina, are participating in the programme.
