The Kumasi Metropolitan Chief Executive, Hon. Richard Ofori Agyeman Boadi, has cut the sod for the commencement of three major development projects aimed at improving healthcare delivery and educational infrastructure in the metropolis.
The projects, which have a combined contract sum of approximately GH₵5.97 million, comprise the construction of a Breast Care Centre at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) and two six-unit classroom blocks at the Garrison Educational Complex and Adiebeba M/A School.
The projects are being financed through the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) and are expected to be completed within six to ten months, depending on the nature of each project.
The sod-cutting ceremony marks the beginning of the construction works and forms part of efforts to strengthen healthcare services and provide a more conducive teaching and learning environment for residents of Kumasi.
BREAST CARE CENTRE.
The construction of the Breast Care Centre at KATH is the largest of the three projects, with a contract sum of GH₵2,442,959.20.
The project has been awarded to M/S Astee Company Limited and is expected to be completed within ten months.
When completed, the facility is expected to contribute to the improvement of breast care services at the hospital by providing dedicated infrastructure to support the delivery of specialised healthcare.
The project is particularly significant in view of the need to strengthen facilities for the early assessment, diagnosis and management of breast-related conditions.
The centre is also expected to support the hospital’s efforts to improve access to specialised care and enhance the overall experience of patients seeking breast health services.
TWO SIX-UNIT CLASSROOM BLOCKS.
In the education sector, the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly is undertaking the construction of two six-unit classroom blocks to improve teaching and learning conditions at the Garrison Educational Complex and Adiebeba M/A School.
The classroom block at the Garrison Educational Complex has a contract sum of GH₵1,770,566.05 and has been awarded to M/S Oak Trio GH Limited.
The project is expected to be completed within six months.
Similarly, the construction of a six-unit classroom block at Adiebeba M/A School has been awarded to M/S Ghartek Construction Works at a cost of GH₵1,751,486.55.
The project is also expected to be completed within six months.
The two projects are expected to increase classroom capacity and help address infrastructure needs in the beneficiary schools.
Adequate classroom accommodation is an important requirement for effective teaching and learning, as it helps create a more organised environment for teachers and pupils while supporting the delivery of quality education.
The construction of the facilities is therefore expected to contribute to efforts to improve educational infrastructure and create better conditions for academic work in the beneficiary institutions.
DACF TO FUND PROJECTS.
All three projects are being funded through the District Assemblies Common Fund, a key source of financing for development interventions undertaken by local assemblies.
The projects reflect the use of public development funds to address infrastructure needs in the health and education sectors.
The combined contract sum for the three projects is GH₵5,965,011.80.
The Breast Care Centre accounts for GH₵2.44 million, while the Garrison Educational Complex and Adiebeba M/A classroom blocks account for approximately GH₵1.77 million and GH₵1.75 million, respectively.
With the commencement of construction, attention will now turn to the timely execution of the contracts and the delivery of quality facilities within the stipulated periods.
EXPECTATIONS.
The sod-cutting exercise by Hon. Richard Ofori Agyeman Boadi signals the start of the three infrastructure projects, which are expected to deliver benefits to healthcare providers, patients, teachers and pupils.
The successful completion of the Breast Care Centre would provide additional infrastructure for specialised breast care at KATH, while the two classroom blocks would provide additional teaching and learning space for the beneficiary schools.
The contractors are expected to execute the projects in accordance with the agreed specifications and timelines.
The Garrison Educational Complex and Adiebeba M/A classroom blocks are expected to be completed within six months, while the Breast Care Centre has a ten-month completion period.
The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly’s monitoring of the projects will be important in ensuring that public funds are translated into durable infrastructure that meets the needs of the intended beneficiaries.
The projects are among the development interventions expected to strengthen the delivery of essential services and support the broader development of Kumasi.
