The Assembly Member for Barniekrom electoral area Mr. Kingsley Asare, a teacher by profession, has called on the management of the Ahafo Ano South West District Assembly to consider furnishing newly constructed JHS blocks in the district with mono desks instead of dual desks. He made this call when the Ahafo Ano South West District Assembly purchased 75 dual desks to furnish the newly constructed JHS block at Oyinanufu.
That, he said, will help promote independent learning and also promote a conducive classroom environment for effective teaching and learning.
Challenge
Mr. Kingsley Asare said the challenges with dual desks were crowded students on the same desk for over six hours in a day, poor sitting posture, not conducive for the management of communicable diseases and difficulty in classroom mobility and management.
In addition, Mr. Kingsley Asare said, “dual desks at the JHS level hinder class control and do not promote individual work”.
He indicated that Momo desks would better enhance the learning experience of the students, improving students’ posture in class and helping their writing skills.
Benefits
Mr. Asare said that if the District Assembly takes his proposal into consideration, it will help minimise interactions with classmates, reduce distractions and improve concentration.
“Mono desks will reduce potential discomfort associated with shared desks,” he said. It will make classroom management and monitoring of individual student progress by teachers easier.
