Over 5,000 youth from Mpatuam, a mining community in the Amansie West District of Ghana’s Ashanti Region, have taken to the streets demanding the immediate departure of Asanko Mines from their community.

The protest follows the tragic killing of Assembly Member Hon. Sampson Dankwah from Aboabo-Tetekaaso and another community member, sparking outrage among residents.

The demonstration coincided with a visit by Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene, accompanied by regional security services, who came to pay respects to the community for the losses incurred.

Dressed in black and red attire with red headgear, the protesting youth carried placards with messages including:
“Asanko Must Go”, “Free Small Scale Mining””We Don’t Want Fight”, “Peace No War”,”Justice for Manso” , and among others.

The youth expressed grievances against Asanko Mines, citing perceived inhumane actions and military brutality associated with the company’s operations.

Protesters indicated they no longer wish to coexist with the mining company due to these concerns.

The unrest stems from a misunderstanding between the community and soldiers deployed by Asanko Mines, leading to fatal consequences.

The community’s demand for the company’s exit reflects deep-seated tensions regarding mining operations and their impact on local populations.

The situation underscores the need for dialogue and resolution addressing the community’s concerns about mining activities, security, and justice for the victims.

The Ashanti Regional Minister’s visit highlights efforts to engage with the community amid escalating tensions.
