The MTN Ghana Foundation has commissioned a state-of-the-art Accident and Emergency Centre at the Ho Teaching Hospital, in a move widely hailed as a major step toward strengthening emergency healthcare services in the Volta Region.

The newly expanded facility, valued at GH¢15.4 million, was officially handed over on March 5, 2026, during a ceremony attended by government officials, healthcare professionals, traditional leaders and representatives from the private sector.
The James Gunu, who graced the occasion as the special guest, commended the Foundation for what he described as a transformational investment that will significantly enhance healthcare delivery across the region.
According to him, strengthening healthcare infrastructure remains critical to the socio-economic development of the region and the country as a whole.
“This intervention by the MTN Ghana Foundation is a remarkable philanthropic gesture that aligns perfectly with government’s vision of providing quality healthcare for all Ghanaians,” the minister stated.
He emphasized that the new emergency centre would not only improve the quality of medical services at the hospital but also help reduce patient referrals to other facilities outside the region.
Commitment to Accessible Healthcare
Speaking at the ceremony, the Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer of MTN Ghana, Adwoa Afriyie Wiafe, reaffirmed the Foundation’s commitment to improving access to quality healthcare across Ghana.
She noted that health remains a fundamental human right and called for collective efforts to ensure that everyone has access to essential healthcare services.
“Health is essential. It is everyone’s right, not just a privilege or a gift. We must all share in this responsibility,” she stressed.
She explained that the newly expanded emergency centre, built to international standards, is designed to ease congestion, improve patient flow and enhance emergency response services at the hospital.
Boost for Emergency Care
The Chief Executive Officer of the hospital, Dr. Hintermann K. K. Mbroh, described the project as a major milestone for the institution’s emergency care delivery.
He explained that the emergency department serves as the frontline unit for critical and life-threatening cases, making modern infrastructure and advanced equipment essential for effective medical response.
Dr. Mbroh added that the upgraded facility will enable healthcare professionals to respond more swiftly and efficiently to emergencies, thereby improving patient outcomes and saving more lives.
He also highlighted the importance of public-private partnerships in strengthening the healthcare sector and expressed appreciation to the MTN Ghana Foundation for its continued investment in health infrastructure.
Vision for Excellence
The Chairman of the hospital’s board, Dr. Delanyo Dovlo, described the project as a significant step toward the hospital’s ambition of becoming a centre of excellence in clinical care and medical training.
Similarly, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Health and Allied Sciences, Lydia Aziato, called for sustained collaboration among stakeholders to further expand specialized healthcare services.
She particularly highlighted the need for improved services in areas such as cardiac care and maternal health, noting that modern healthcare infrastructure plays a vital role in both patient treatment and the training of future healthcare professionals.
Modern Medical Equipment
The expanded 30-bed Accident and Emergency facility is equipped with modern medical technologies designed to handle trauma cases, sudden illnesses and other life-threatening emergencies.
Key equipment installed at the centre includes patient and cardiac monitors, portable ultrasound machines, ventilators, electrocardiogram (ECG) machines, defibrillators with pacemaker capabilities, and arterial blood gas analyzers.
Other additions include haematology and biochemistry analyzers, blood storage refrigerators, infusion pumps, suction devices, crash carts, blood warmers, hospital beds, stretchers and examination lamps.
To improve accessibility for critically ill patients and persons living with disabilities, the facility also features a modern elevator system.
Call for Proper Maintenance
Management of the hospital has been encouraged to ensure proper maintenance of the facility to guarantee its longevity and continuous delivery of high-quality emergency care.
Healthcare professionals believe the upgraded centre will significantly improve survival rates for critically ill patients, reduce delays in emergency treatment and minimize the need for referrals to hospitals outside the region.
Track Record of Community Support
The project forms part of the MTN Ghana Foundation’s ongoing efforts to support community development and strengthen healthcare systems across Ghana.
Over the years, the Foundation has undertaken several impactful initiatives in the Volta Region, including the construction of a 60-bed maternity and neonatal intensive care unit at the Keta Municipal Hospital, upgrades to the Kpedze Health Centre, and the provision of a potable water system for the Kpeve community.

These interventions underscore the Foundation’s commitment to improving healthcare delivery and enhancing the well-being of communities across the country.

Dignitaries present at the ceremony included representatives of the Asogli Traditional Council, led by Togbe Kasa, as well as board members of the MTN Ghana Foundation and officials from the security services.

The commissioning of the emergency centre marks another significant chapter in the partnership between the private sector and healthcare institutions in Ghana’s quest to deliver efficient, accessible and lifesaving medical care for all citizens.
