The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has extended formal congratulations to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) following the successful conduct of its presidential candidate primaries, describing the exercise as peaceful, orderly, and reflective of Ghana’s growing democratic maturity.
In a statement issued in Accra on Saturday and signed by the National Chairman of the NDC, Hon. Johnson Asiedu-Nketiah, the opposition party acknowledged the NPP’s ability to organise a violence-free internal election that culminated in the election of former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the party’s flagbearer for the presidential election scheduled for December 2028.
According to the NDC, the peaceful nature of the primaries underscores the importance of internal party democracy and reinforces public confidence in Ghana’s multi-party political system. The party noted that such exercises, when conducted transparently and without intimidation, contribute significantly to national cohesion and democratic consolidation.
The statement also reserved special commendation for the Ghana Police Service, praising its “remarkable and efficient” deployment across the country during the primaries. The NDC stated that the professionalism exhibited by the police before, during, and after the exercise played a critical role in maintaining calm and ensuring the safety of party delegates, officials, observers, and the general public.

“The conduct of the security agencies once again demonstrates the pivotal role they play in safeguarding Ghana’s democratic processes,” the statement said, adding that impartial and vigilant security arrangements are essential to sustaining peace, especially during politically sensitive events.

Beyond congratulating the NPP and the security services, the NDC emphasized the need for collective responsibility among all political actors in strengthening the nation’s democracy.

It welcomed the collaboration and participation of the NPP and other political parties in what it described as a shared national quest to deepen democratic governance and respect for constitutional rule.

The opposition party further took note of the concession and reconciliation statements issued by candidates who were unsuccessful in the NPP primaries. While welcoming these gestures as positive steps toward party unity, the NDC expressed hope that such statements would be matched by concrete actions on the ground to foster lasting peace and cohesion within the ruling party.

Political analysts say the statement reflects a growing tradition in Ghanaian politics where parties publicly acknowledge credible electoral processes across political divides, a practice often cited as one of the country’s democratic strengths in the West African sub-region.

The statement was officially issued in Accra on February 1, 2026, and signed by Hon. Johnson Asiedu-Nketiah, National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress.

As Ghana steadily moves toward another election cycle, observers believe that continued mutual respect among political parties, coupled with strong institutional support from state agencies, will be crucial in preserving the country’s reputation as a beacon of democratic stability in Africa.
