A leading member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), H.E Alhaji Said Sinare, is urging President John Dramani Mahama to protect Sarah Adwoa Safo, a former Lawmaker for Dome-Kwabenya and Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, from alleged political retribution by the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Sinare’s appeal comes after Adwoa Safo revealed internal party pressures and alleged underhand dealings within the NPP, which have reportedly unsettled key party figures and sparked speculation of an orchestrated campaign to silence or punish her.

Sinare emphasized the importance of safeguarding whistleblowers like Adwoa Safo, who play a crucial role in strengthening democratic accountability.

“We cannot sit back and watch as the reckless NPP victimizes one of its own simply for telling the truth,” Sinare stated. “If Adwoa Safo is being persecuted for exposing their internal rot, then it is a clear sign of the vindictive nature of the former government.”

Adwoa Safo has had a tumultuous relationship with the NPP leadership in recent years and recently revealed details of alleged coercion and mistreatment by top government officials.

Her claims have sparked debate over the extent of internal strife in the NPP before the 2024 general elections.

Sinare cautioned that targeting individuals for speaking out sets a dangerous precedent for Ghana’s democracy.

He urged President Mahama and civil society groups to condemn any acts of political intimidation against Adwoa Safo and others facing similar threats.
