Kwame Awuah Darko, a former Managing Director of the Tema Oil Refinery, has made a shocking claim that the Ashanti Region is no longer a stronghold for the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) ahead of the 2024 polls.

According to him, the NPP’s neglect of the region over the past eight years has led to widespread discontent among residents, who are now unwilling to retain them in power.

In an interview on Kumasi-based OTEC 102.9 FM’s afternoon political show Dwabrem, Mr. Darko noted that the NPP has sidelined the very region that brought them into power.

He contrasted this with the National Democratic Congress (NDC), which he said has sought to develop the Ashanti Region with massive development projects across all sectors of the economy.

Mr. Darko’s claims are backed by sentiments expressed by traders in the Kejetia Market, who have accused the NPP of neglecting the Ashanti region despite its significant contribution to the party’s electoral victories in 2016 and 2020. The traders have called for the completion of stalled development projects, including the Kejetia project’s phase 2-3, which has displaced thousands of traders.

The NPP, however, remains optimistic about its chances in the Ashanti region.

Awuah Darko thinks the New Patriotic Party (NPP) hasn’t done enough to earn votes, so he’s urging Ashanti Region voters to support John Mahama instead. He believes Mahama’s leadership will bring more development to the region.
