The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has long been regarded as a champion of economic development and good governance in Ghana.
The party’s constitution enshrines several key objectives that have guided its policies and programs over the years.
These objectives include managing the economy with efficiency and prudence, promoting a vibrant free-market economy, creating a climate conducive to private enterprise, solving the problem of massive unemployment, and ensuring that the wealth of the country is fairly shared and enjoyed by all.
NPP’s Achievements in Economic Management.
Under the leadership of former Presidents John Kufuor and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the NPP has implemented several policies and programs that have contributed significantly to Ghana’s economic development.
These include the implementation of various social protection programs such as the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) program, the School Feeding Program, and the Capitation Grant.
These programs have been designed to support the vulnerable and marginalized in society, and have had a positive impact on the lives of many Ghanaians.
Continuity of NPP Policies under NDC Government.
Interestingly, the 2025 budget presented by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government, led by President John Mahama, has been anchored on some key policies and programs initiated by the NPP. For instance, the budget speech highlights the continuation of the Free SHS policy, the School Feeding Program, and the Capitation Grant, all of which were introduced by the NPP. Additionally, the budget relies on revenue measures such as the Earmarked Funds Capping and Realignment Act, 2017 (Act 947), the Mineral Income Investment Fund (MIIF) Act, 2018 (Act 978), and the Growth & Sustainability Levy Act, 2023 (Act 1095), all of which were passed by the NPP government.
Implications for Ghana’s Development
The fact that the NDC government is relying on NPP policies and programs is a testament to the party’s legacy as a champion of economic development and good governance. It also highlights the importance of continuity and collaboration in national development. By building on the foundations laid by previous governments, the NDC government can ensure that Ghana’s development trajectory is not hindered by partisan politics.
In conclusion, the NPP’s legacy continues to shape Ghana’s development, even under an NDC government. The party’s commitment to economic development, good governance, and social protection programs has had a lasting impact on the country. As Ghana looks to the future, it is essential that all stakeholders work together to build on the progress made so far and to address the challenges that lie ahead. The NPP’s policies and programs will undoubtedly continue to play a significant role in shaping Ghana’s development trajectory.
Looking Ahead to 2028.
As the country looks ahead to the 2028 general election, it is clear that the NPP’s legacy will continue to be a major factor in Ghana’s politics. With the right presidential candidate and parliamentary candidates, coupled with unity of purpose, the NPP is well-positioned to win power from the NDC. The party’s track record of economic management, social protection programs, and commitment to good governance will undoubtedly be key factors in its electoral prospects.
