The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Oforikrom in the Ashanti Region, Hon. Anwel Sadat, on Sunday, February 1, 2026, joined the leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and other distinguished dignitaries to grace the first Akwasidae celebration of the year at the historic Manhyia Palace.
The high-profile delegation included respected members of the Council of State, notably Hon. Betty Mould-Iddrisu and Chairman Yaw Obimpeh, alongside senior party officials, traditional leaders, and government representatives, who gathered to pay homage to the Asantehene, His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
The colourful and culturally rich ceremony, one of the most revered traditional observances in Asanteman, attracted traditional rulers, political leaders, opinion leaders, and citizens from across the Ashanti Region and beyond.
The event once again highlighted the deep-rooted cultural heritage of the Asante people and the enduring relevance of traditional authority in modern governance.
The presence of Hon. Anwel Sadat and the NDC leadership at the Akwasidae celebration underscored the strong bond between political leadership and traditional institutions, as well as the shared commitment to promoting peace, unity, and development within the region. It also reflected the party’s recognition of the central role of chieftaincy institutions in fostering social cohesion and national progress.
Addressing the august gathering on behalf of the government, the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, conveyed the warm greetings and best wishes of His Excellency the President to the Asantehene and the entire Asanteman. He reaffirmed government’s respect for traditional authorities and pledged continued collaboration with the Manhyia Palace to advance development initiatives across the region.
Dr. Amoakohene praised Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for his visionary leadership and tireless efforts in promoting education, healthcare, peacebuilding, and economic empowerment, not only within the Ashanti Kingdom but across Ghana. He noted that the Asantehene’s wisdom and statesmanship remain invaluable assets to national unity and stability.
The Akwasidae celebration featured the customary rites, drumming, dancing, and the exchange of courtesies, providing a platform for interaction between traditional leaders, political figures, and the general public. It also served as a reminder of the cultural values that bind the Asante people together and the importance of preserving these traditions for future generations.
Hon. Anwel Sadat, in brief interactions with the media, expressed his gratitude to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for the opportunity to participate in the ceremony.
