Regular consumption of garlic may offer benefits for cardiovascular health, particularly in relation to blood pressure and cholesterol levels, according to Dr Prince Nelson Mortoti, Chief Executive Officer of PIWAK Natural Health, producers of 3P Garlic Mixture.

Dr Mortoti said garlic, a popular ingredient in Ghanaian kitchens, contains naturally occurring sulphur compounds and other bioactive substances that have attracted growing scientific interest because of their potential effects on the heart and blood vessels.

He explained that when fresh garlic is crushed or chopped, it produces compounds such as allicin, which is believed to contribute to some of garlic’s biological activities.

According to him, incorporating garlic into a balanced diet could be one of the simple dietary choices people make to support their overall wellbeing.

“Garlic is not only useful for flavouring food. It contains compounds that may support cardiovascular health when consumed as part of a healthy lifestyle,” Dr Mortoti said.

Possible blood pressure benefits
High blood pressure remains a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, including stroke and heart disease.
Dr Mortoti noted that research into garlic has suggested that certain garlic preparations may help reduce blood pressure, particularly among people with elevated blood pressure.
He, however, cautioned that garlic should not be considered a substitute for prescribed medication.
People who have been diagnosed with hypertension should continue to follow the advice of their healthcare providers and should consult a qualified professional before changing or stopping any medication.
Possible cholesterol benefits
Garlic has also been studied for its possible effects on blood cholesterol.
Some research suggests that certain garlic preparations may produce modest improvements in cholesterol and other blood-lipid measures. However, the effects can differ depending on the type of garlic preparation, the amount consumed and the individual.
Dr Mortoti said the potential benefits of garlic should therefore be viewed as part of a broader approach to cardiovascular health rather than as a stand-alone treatment.
Supporting healthy blood vessels
Beyond blood pressure and cholesterol, garlic contains antioxidant and other bioactive compounds that may contribute to the body’s defence against oxidative stress.
Oxidative stress can contribute to damage in cells and tissues and is associated with a number of chronic health conditions.
Dr Mortoti said maintaining cardiovascular health required more than relying on one food.
He advised people to combine healthy eating with regular physical activity, adequate rest, moderation in alcohol consumption and routine medical checks.
Moderation remains important
Despite its potential benefits, Dr Mortoti cautioned against excessive consumption of garlic.
Large quantities, particularly of raw garlic, may cause heartburn, stomach upset, abdominal discomfort and strong breath or body odour in some people.
He also urged consumers who use concentrated garlic supplements or mixtures to follow the recommended dosage rather than assuming that taking more would produce greater health benefits.
Caution for people on medication
People taking certain medicines should also exercise caution.
Garlic supplements may affect blood clotting and could increase the risk of bleeding, particularly when combined with blood-thinning medicines.
Dr Mortoti therefore advised people on regular medication, those with bleeding conditions and individuals preparing for surgery to seek professional medical advice before using concentrated garlic products.

He stressed that the goal should be to incorporate garlic responsibly into an overall healthy lifestyle.

“Garlic can be part of a healthy diet, but it should complement—not replace—proper medical care and healthy living,” he said.

For consumers of 3P Garlic Mixture and other concentrated garlic products, Dr Mortoti encouraged adherence to recommended instructions and consultation with qualified health professionals where necessary.

Ultimately, regular garlic intake may contribute to cardiovascular wellbeing, but its potential benefits are best realised alongside a balanced diet, exercise and appropriate medical care.
