Graphic Online has confirmed that the Assin Central Member of Parliament (MP) and New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, had his homage and gift turned down at the Asogli Palace on Friday, according to the palace spokesman for Togbe Afede XIV.
Mr. Agyapong was made aware by a few sub-chiefs and elders at the Asogli Palace in Ho-Bankoe that the Agbogbomefia was not prepared to accept any form of homage from him.
Mr. Agyapong attempted to honour Togbe Afede XIV, the Agbogbomefia of Asogli, at the Asogli Palace in Ho-Bankoe on Friday, the day before the Te Za (yam festival) durbar, but he was denied permission to do so.
In the absence of any other choice, Mr Agyapong, who was spotted seated near the Volta Regional NPP Chairman, Kafui Woanya, waved goodbye to some of the crowd and left the palace, according to Graphic Online’s Volta Regional Correspondent, Alberto Mario Noretti, who was there. Later, a palace spokeswoman told Graphic Online that Mr Agyapong’s “gross lack of respect” for the Agbogbomefia was the reason for the decision to refuse his gifts of tribute.
“A few years ago, Kennedy referred to our Agbogbomefia as a corrupt person who used his position as the chairman of the National Investment Bank board to do fishy deals.”
“We have also not forgotten the comment Kennedy Agyapong made some years ago about the Ewe and Ga people,” said the palace spokesman.
People from all walks of life, including distinguished individuals and corporate bodies besieged, the palace to demonstrate their love and respect to Togbe Afede XIV and pay homage to him when he sat in state on Friday (September 9, 2022).
The palace spokesman made it clear that Mr Agyapong was not chased out of the palace contrary to some reports.
He left without anyone running after him soon after we told him that his presence and homage were unsolicited,” the spokesman added.
