Residents of the Ridge Nhyiaeso Electoral Area in the Kumasi Metropolis have participated in a massive clean-up exercise as part of activities marking this year’s National Sanitation Day, reaffirming their commitment to environmental cleanliness and public health.
The exercise, which brought together residents, students, assembly staff and other stakeholders, was led by the Assembly Member for the area, Mr Abraham Boadi, under the broader vision of the Mayor of Kumasi, Mr Richard Kwasi Ofori Boadi Agyemang, who has consistently championed initiatives aimed at making the city cleaner and healthier.

Participants desilted drains, swept streets, collected refuse and cleared weeds from public spaces within the electoral area to improve sanitation and reduce the risk of disease outbreaks.
The clean-up exercise received significant support from students drawn from Anglican Senior High School, Osei Kyeretwie Senior High School (OKESS), Afua Kobi Ampem Girls Senior High School and Asanteman Senior High School. Members of the various school cadet corps actively participated in the exercise, demonstrating the important role young people can play in environmental protection and community development.
The event also attracted the attention of former Mayor of Kumasi, Mr Samuel Pyne, who stopped by the clean-up site to interact with participants and commend them for their dedication to keeping the community clean.
Addressing participants, Mr Boadi expressed appreciation to residents and volunteers for their commitment to the exercise and urged them to make cleanliness a daily responsibility rather than a periodic activity.
He noted that maintaining a clean environment was essential for safeguarding public health, promoting civic responsibility and enhancing the overall image of the metropolis.

The strong turnout and collaborative spirit exhibited during the exercise underscored the growing commitment of residents and stakeholders towards supporting efforts to build a clean, safe and sustainable Kumasi.

Participants called for sustained public education and regular community engagement to ensure that the gains made through sanitation exercises are maintained throughout the year.
The National Sanitation Day initiative forms part of broader efforts by local authorities and communities across the country to improve environmental sanitation and promote healthy living.
