The Oforikrom Municipal Assembly in the Ashanti Region has recruited 100 people to undertake daily sweeping and cleaning exercises along principal streets, major commercial areas and other busy locations within the municipality.
The initiative, spearheaded by the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Oforikrom, Hon. Anwel Sadat Ahmed, forms part of his “Keep Oforikrom Clean” campaign, aimed at improving sanitation, promoting environmental cleanliness and creating a healthier environment for residents and businesses.
The newly recruited workers have been deployed to strategic locations, including the principal streets of Oforikrom, the Tech Junction area and other busy market centres where human and vehicular activities generate significant amounts of waste.
The exercise is expected to ensure that major public spaces remain clean and presentable while also complementing the efforts of the Assembly’s sanitation and waste management units.
Sanitation campaign
Speaking on the initiative, Hon. Anwel Sadat Ahmed said the decision to recruit the workers was part of measures to give sanitation issues in the municipality the attention they deserved.
He said maintaining a clean environment required a sustained effort and the active participation of residents, traders, transport operators and other stakeholders.
According to him, the Assembly was committed to ensuring that public spaces within Oforikrom were regularly cleaned and maintained to improve the quality of life of residents.
He appealed to residents and businesses to support the campaign by properly disposing of their waste and desisting from activities that undermined sanitation efforts.
Focus on busy areas
The MCE noted that areas such as Tech Junction and the various market centres attracted large numbers of people every day and, therefore, required regular cleaning to prevent the accumulation of refuse.
He said the deployment of the 100 workers would help address the sanitation challenges in those areas and ensure that cleaning activities were carried out consistently.
The initiative, he explained, was not only about sweeping the streets but also about changing attitudes towards sanitation and encouraging residents to take ownership of the cleanliness of their communities.
Call for public support
Hon. Anwel Sadat Ahmed urged residents to see the “Keep Oforikrom Clean” campaign as a collective responsibility rather than an initiative solely for the Assembly.
He called on traders, shop owners, drivers, commuters, landlords and residents to cooperate with the sanitation workers and make conscious efforts to keep their immediate surroundings clean.
He also urged the public to avoid indiscriminate dumping of refuse, particularly on streets, drains and other unauthorised locations.
The MCE said the Assembly would continue to explore additional measures to improve sanitation across the municipality and make Oforikrom a cleaner and healthier place to live, work and conduct business.
Cleaner Oforikrom
The “Keep Oforikrom Clean” campaign is expected to contribute to efforts to improve the appearance of the municipality, reduce the accumulation of refuse and promote responsible sanitation practices among residents.
The recruitment of the 100 workers also provides employment opportunities for people within the municipality while addressing an important public health and environmental concern.
With the campaign now covering major streets and commercial centres, the Assembly is hopeful that sustained cleaning, coupled with public cooperation, will help create a cleaner and more environmentally friendly Oforikrom.
