Rising Hypertension Cases in Amenfi Central Constituency: Experts Urge Regular Checkups

Amenfi Central Constituency in Ghana’s Western Region is witnessing a concerning surge in hypertension cases, according to Dr. Shepherd Aflakpui, a medical doctor at Clinic Pharma in Accra.

Dr. Aflakpui made these remarks following a week-long health screening exercise and breast cancer awareness campaign conducted by the Joana Gyan Foundation in Manso Amanfi,Sureso,Sraha,Agona Camp,Ohenekrom and Wassa Sompre,all in Amenfi Central Constituency, in the month October.

The comprehensive health screening, which included tests for malaria, hypertension, eye screening, HIV, breast examination, nose and throat screening, blood sugar, syphilis, retro screening, typhoid, hepatitis B, hemoglobin level checks, and general consultations, revealed that hypertension cases topped the list among the conditions screened.

Dr. Aflakpui highlighted that hypertension cases are on the rise in Amenfi Central, underscoring the need for proactive measures.

He noted contributing factors include age, obesity, lack of regular physical activity, poor diet, alcohol consumption, and smoking – common risk factors for cardiovascular diseases.

The doctor stressed the importance of residents undertaking regular blood pressure checkups to ascertain their hypertension status.

Dr. Aflakpui recommended training community members on hypertension testing to facilitate widespread awareness and early detection.

He emphasized hypertension can be managed or prevented through diet changes, exercise, weight management, and reducing sodium intake.

According to Dr. Aflakpui, uncontrolled hypertension heightens the risk of Heart Disease,Stroke,Kidney Damage, etc.

“Management often involves a combination of lifestyle changes and, if needed, medical treatment under healthcare provider guidance,” Dr. Aflakpui stated, advising residents to seek professional medical advice for effective hypertension management.

The health screening and breast cancer awareness campaign, conducted with a team of professional doctors from Accra, reflects ongoing efforts by the Joana Gyan Foundation headed by Hon Joana Gyan Cudjoe, the member of parliament for the area to promote health and wellness in Amenfi Central Constituency.

Hon. Joana Gyan Cudjoe, has been active in promoting healthcare access in her constituency, including previous initiatives like supporting education and health outreach programs .

Dr. Aflakpui’s message underscores the critical need for regular health checkups, lifestyle adjustments, and awareness to tackle the growing incidence of hypertension in Amenfi Central. Residents are encouraged to embrace preventive measures and seek medical guidance to mitigate risks associated with high blood pressure.

Addressing hypertension requires multifaceted approaches including individual awareness, community engagement, and healthcare interventions. The situation in Amenfi Central highlights the broader public health imperative of managing cardiovascular risk factors for overall community well-being.
