Star Oil Builds New Primary School to End Dangerous Lake Crossings for CK Kope Children

137

For generations, the children of CK Kope in Tapa Abotoase, Biakoye District, Oti Region, have faced a life-threatening obstacle on their path to education—crossing the mighty Volta Lake. Day after day, they braved treacherous waters, sometimes in unsafe boats, and heartbreakingly, some never made it back.

But now, hope has arrived on solid ground. Star Oil, Ghana’s leading Oil Marketing Company (OMC), has opened the doors to a brand-new primary school in CK Kope, offering not only education but also safety and opportunity.

A School Born from a Community’s Cry
The project began when Star Oil’s Board Chairman, Torgbui Xornametor (Mr. Vincent Kaledzi), visited the area and listened to the heartbreaking stories from residents. The community shared how their children’s pursuit of education often turned tragic. Moved by their plight, he vowed that Star Oil would be the solution.

“This project is deeply personal for us,” said Star Oil’s CEO, Philip Tieku, at the commissioning ceremony. “It was here in Tapa Abotoase that our founding father, Mr. Khaleji, began his fuel business. Today, we honor those beginnings by ensuring the children of this community can build their futures without risking their lives.”

A Safe Haven for Learning
The newly commissioned school, valued at nearly two million Ghana cedis, offers:

Fully furnished classrooms to foster quality learning
Separate washrooms for staff and students
A staff room and a headmaster’s office
Other auxiliary facilities for a modern educational experience
The school was designed not only to educate but also to protect the children. Star Oil went a step further to address ongoing safety concerns, providing 500 life jackets to safeguard children and residents who still need to cross the Volta Lake.

“No child should ever risk their life for an education,” Mr. Tieku declared. “With this school and the life jackets, we are removing the barriers between these children and their dreams.”

More Than a Building—A Commitment to the Future
Star Oil’s investment goes beyond construction. The company has pledged to:

Join the School Management Committee (SMC) to ensure high educational standards
Support teachers and parents in creating a thriving learning environment
Offer ongoing assistance to maintain the school’s facilities and excellence
“We are not just building classrooms; we are building futures,” Mr. Tieku emphasized. “This school will remain a center of excellence for many years to come.”

A Community’s Gratitude and a Hopeful Future
At the commissioning ceremony, Roslyn Kafui Ofori, Biakoye District Education Director, expressed the community’s heartfelt gratitude. She praised Star Oil for transforming the lives of CK Kope’s children and urged the company to continue its support by helping improve access roads to the district education office.

The ceremony was attended by traditional leaders, local authorities, project partners, and educators, all united in their joy and appreciation.

A New Dawn for CK Kope’s Children
For the children of CK Kope, this school is more than a building—it is freedom from fear and hope for a brighter future. They no longer face the danger of the lake to learn. Parents are relieved, knowing their children are safe. Teachers are inspired, ready to mold the minds of tomorrow’s leaders.

As Mr. Tieku concluded:

“To the students, this school is yours—study hard, dream big, and know that Star Oil stands behind you, believing in your future.”

With this monumental project, Star Oil has not only honored its past but has also secured the future—one child, one classroom, and one life at a time.
