In a significant display of unity and cooperation, over 70 queen mothers from the Kejetia and Central Market paid a courtesy call on the Mayor of Kumasi, Hon. Richard Ofori-Agyeman Boadi.

The delegation, led by Nana Yaa Fowaa (Oforiwaa), the esteemed Yam Market Queen, came to congratulate the Mayor on his appointment and expressed their willingness to work closely with him to promote the interests of Asanteman.

During the meeting, Hon. Boadi expressed heartfelt appreciation for the queen mothers’ visit and kind words, assuring them of his commitment to strengthening ties between the city administration and the market leadership.

This commitment is crucial in ensuring the smooth operation of the market and addressing the needs of its traders.

The Mayor provided an update on the Kumasi City Market Ltd. (KCML), disclosing that the outstanding utility bill owed to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) had been significantly reduced from GH¢3 million to GH¢1.5 million. An agreement is in place to pay the remaining amount in installments, demonstrating the city’s efforts to manage its financial obligations.

To support the development of the facility and fulfill obligations to the state and its institutions, Hon. Boadi urged all traders to ensure prompt payment of bills, taxes, and levies.

As a sign of commitment to improving market operations, the kitchen facility at the market has been provided with three water tanks to ensure a consistent water supply. This initiative will undoubtedly enhance the overall trading experience for market women and visitors alike.

The Mayor also outlined future plans for the market, including the constitution of a new board that will prioritize securing insurance coverage for the facility. This move will provide some level of protection for traders and help mitigate potential risks. Additionally, issues such as obstructed access routes and unauthorized containers within the market will be addressed to allow for emergency access and smoother operations.

In a significant announcement, Hon. Boadi reiterated the unwavering commitment of H.E. John Dramani Mahama to the completion of Phase II of the market project.

This initiative is expected to ease congestion, boost commercial activity, and restore confidence in Kumasi’s business environment. The completion of Phase II will undoubtedly have a positive impact on the city’s economy and reinforce its position as a major commercial hub.

The meeting between the queen mothers and the Mayor marks the beginning of a new era of collaboration and cooperation between the city administration and the market leadership. With a shared commitment to improving market operations and promoting the interests of Asanteman, the stage is set for significant progress and development in the years to come.
