The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially released the provisional results of candidates who sat for the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for School Candidates, paving the way for the next stage of the country’s secondary school placement process.
In a press release dated July 29, 2026, WAEC announced that the results have been dispatched to the various Metropolitan, Municipal and District Directors of Education for onward distribution to schools. Candidates who wish to check their results online can also do so through the Council’s official website.
620,243 Candidates Sat the Examination
According to WAEC, a total of 620,243 candidates from 20,789 schools registered for the examination. The figure comprises 304,415 males and 315,828 females.
The Council disclosed that the examination was conducted at 2,237 centres nationwide and included 136 visually impaired candidates, 282 candidates with hearing assessment needs, and 510 candidates who required other test accommodations.
WAEC further revealed that 3,601 registered candidates were absent from the examination.
Malpractice Sanctions
Following investigations into reported examination irregularities, the 37th Meeting of the Final Awards and Examiners’ Appointment Committee approved sanctions against candidates found to have breached examination regulations.
The Council announced the following actions:
Cancellation of subject results for 496 candidates.
Cancellation of entire results for 105 candidates.
Withholding of subject results for 119 candidates.
Withholding of entire results for 48 candidates.
Additionally, the subject results of 2,722 candidates from 229 schools have been withheld pending further investigations.
WAEC stated that investigations are expected to be completed by August 31, 2026, after which the withheld results will either be released or cancelled, depending on the outcome.
Candidates Advised to Check Status.
The Council urged candidates whose results have been cancelled or withheld to visit the designated irregularity portal to verify their status and obtain further information on the next course of action.
Heads of schools and proprietors can also use their results-listing login credentials to monitor the status of affected candidates.
Warning Against Fraudsters.
WAEC cautioned the public against individuals who claim they can upgrade examination results in exchange for money.
The Council stressed that BECE results are secure, verifiable and cannot be altered through illegal means, urging candidates and parents to disregard such fraudulent offers.
