The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Mr Albert kwabena Dwumfour has said the association will soon launch the “See Something, say something to a Journalist” initiative to contribute its share to security agencies.
He said the initiative which is distinct from that of the national security’s, aims to “contribute our share as the media to the security agencies by championing the dissemination of information on offenses in the country and attacks on journalists”.
Speaking at the Excellence Media Awards organiszed by the Ashanti regional branch of the Ghana Journalists Association in Kumasi, to award some Journalists for their contribution to media development, he said, the initiative will encourage individuals to voluntarily disclose information about the offenses in the country and attacks on Journalists.
Mr Dwunfour noted that some individuals misinterpret the role of Journalists and plot to attack them at the least opportunity, adding that such a phenomenon cannot continue under his administration.
While saying some Journalists have acted unethically and it is being dealt with by the GJA and the National Media Commission (NMC), he urged those who are dissatisfied with the works and the activities of a Journalist, and not need to result to cruel methods to resolve their differences.
He said Journalists will continue to perform their watchdog role with the utmost professionalism to ensure good governance, justice, fairness, and gender empowerment as well as to improve the living conditions of the average citizen by holding the government accountable.
For his part, the Chairman of the National Media Commission (NMC), Mr Yaw Boadu-Ayeboafo, enumerated the role of the media in the nation’s development.
Commending the media for their contribution to the nation’s development was the Education Minister, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum.
