According to reports by myjoyonline, Haruna Rashid, the Nasara Coordinator for the Agona West NPP Constituency, is in critical condition after a violent clash erupted during a campaign event in Agona Nyarkrom, Central Region. The incident, which left Rashid with gunshot wounds, unfolded around 9 p.m. while he was traveling in the convoy of Agona West NPP Parliamentary Candidate Chris Arthur. Three others were also injured in the encounter.

According to police sources, tensions flared when supporters of Chris Arthur and Cynthia Morrison, a rival NPP candidate, crossed paths while campaigning in the same area. Reports suggest that Arthur’s convoy encountered a roadblock allegedly set up by Morrison’s supporters, and attempts to avoid the obstruction led to gunfire.

Arthur recounted the sequence of events, explaining that as they approached the Nyarkrom Township, the convoy decided to change direction to avoid the roadblock. “We decided to change direction, but it was too late,” Arthur said, describing how unidentified individuals poured alcohol on their driver, causing him to lose control. Two men then approached and shot Rashid, who serves as Arthur’s campaign manager, striking him in the ribs.

Rashid was rushed to Agona Swedru Municipal Hospital but was later transferred to Korle Bu Teaching Hospital for advanced care due to the seriousness of his injuries.

The Agona West NPP Constituency Chairman, Alhaji Jibri Tanko, condemned the violence, urging supporters to avoid intimidation tactics in the campaign. “We will not allow anyone to intimidate us in this election,” he declared.

Two supporters from Morrison’s camp were also injured by gunfire and are receiving treatment at Agona Nyarkrom Health Center. Authorities are currently investigating the incident.
