The Chief of Dunkwa On-Offin in the Central Region, Nana Okofrobuor Obeng Nuako III, has expressed concerns about the government’s handling of the galamsey menace in Ghana. According to Nana Obeng Nuako, the government has stripped traditional leaders of their powers to act against galamsey operators, leaving them helpless in the fight against illegal mining.
This statement comes after reports of illegal miners operating in the Offin River with excavators, gold washing plants, and changfans day and night.
Nana Obeng Nuako III is appealing to the government, particularly President John Dramani Mahama, to restore the powers of traditional leaders to combat galamsey.
In an interview with the media, Nana Obeng Nuako emphasized the need for traditional leaders to be empowered to address the galamsey issue.
The issue of galamsey has been a persistent problem in Ghana, with its effects felt on the environment, economy, and health of citizens .
