Kumasi Mayor Champions Road Safety Initiative

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly’s (KMA) Road Safety Advisory Board has held its maiden meeting on August 4, 2025, with Mayor Hon. Richard Ofori-Agyeman Boadi emphasizing the need for stronger education and technical support to reduce accidents and pedestrian fatalities.

As part of the Bloomberg Initiative for Global Road Safety (BIGRS), the board brings together stakeholders from various sectors to tackle road safety challenges in Kumasi.

Key Issues Addressed

– Traffic Congestion: Worsening traffic congestion in the city was a major concern, with stakeholders calling for sustainable solutions.
– Faulty Traffic Signals: Malfunctioning traffic lights and poor street lighting were identified as contributing factors to accidents.
– Illegal Loading Points: Unauthorized loading points were also highlighted as a key issue needing attention.
– Unapproved Transport Fares: Stakeholders discussed concerns over commercial drivers charging unapproved fares.

 

Mayor Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi reaffirmed his commitment to improving road safety in Kumasi, stating, “Reducing pedestrian fatalities is a key part of our agenda.” He pledged to work with the board to develop a comprehensive and sustainable response to road safety challenges facing the city.

 

The Road Safety Advisory Board comprises representatives from various stakeholders, including:
Kumasi Traditional Council, Transport Unions, Building and Road Research Institute of the CSIR,
Department of Urban Roads,
Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital,
National Ambulance Service,
National Road Safety Authority,
Police MTTD, Ghana Highways Authority and Urban Transport Department.

The meeting marked a significant step towards addressing road safety concerns in Kumasi, with stakeholders committed to working together to create a safer and more efficient transportation system.
